My AUII XR ute had the clunking into first as well from new. The BTR engineer came to Strapp Ford and we went for a drive. He said mine had the issue but was borderline in terms of repair. (Valve body exchange)
I ended up installing a PWR trans cooler in series with the radiator cooler, keeping up regular maintenance of fluid and filter changes which seemed to lessen the harsh downshifts into first.
