A little reduction in visibility has a perfect trade off in excellent passenger cell protection. Not only the A pillars have to take the weight of a car flipped over, they help transfer the energy over the passenger cell in a forward accident (instead of right through the car).
If you think that the "big" A-pillars are some sort of lazy engineering bungle, perhaps you should write to them personally and suggest they design A-pillars like this again...
