As for the noise it's definitely evident in the cabin and apart from the lag, this would have to be one of my biggest bugbears. Having said that i get annoyed with little squeaks and rattles so maybe it's just me

Because people don't know how to drive a diesel correctly.
Ever notice that when the soot starts you get no more power despite how hard you press the throttle?
It's not bad driving, just most people haven't been taught.
Look at a video of a big diesel doing a really, really cold start. Smoke and flames and crap flying everywhere. That's overfuelling.
