I did just that on my EF wagon so I'd think the AU would be the same. The Sensor sits on a rubber seal and is held in by a threaded plug. You unscrew that plug.
If it is that tight then it may be easier to get a new sensor - Pretty sure all those bits were available on Ebay. Well they were a few years ago when I fitted a new coolant bottle - I tried the aftermarket one but it kept leaking so eventually I went back to an original one.
