They are a halo brand.
Ford would have stopped making mustangs in the 70's if it were just about money, but they and the many owners of AML know they can use the brand as a marketing tool to funnel buyers toward their more pedestrian offerings.
Same reason David Brown bought them in the 50's. Also ego of course...
