Yes, but in the particular segment (large cars) it was RWD and that was what sold - even into its end of production VF continued to sell far better than its replacement has. While the VF sold well, and into the Falcon's heyday when it sold well, I'm sure most of the top 20 was still FWD. But that segment, large cars, was dominated by RWD. So maybe the replacements
do drive with the wrong wheels for that segment.
Let's look at the natural successor segment for Falcon and Commodore buyers - premium midsize and premium large sedan segments. BMW, Merc, Jag, Audi: do RWD or FWD dominate sales in this segment?
