Yeah, same problem. The first thing the wife said was "I cant reach that". It is very high - the ford design guys have overlooked this a bit I think.
A strap sounds like the go. If you do do something post some phots up, I'm sure there are others with the same problem.
Something like a retractable cord mounted in the boot lip area running up to the hatch itself would be great. maybe like an inertia reel seat belt retractor or similar. Thatr way the cord would retact as the hatch closes, so no cord to hang out the boot when closed.
