I don't think it'd hurt. When I took mine to ford it was for an independent assessment before the car went back to the dealer (not ford) I bought from. I didn't proceed with full inspection and report because they did a quick scan and found no fault codes. The guy explained that it's pretty much impossible for them to diagnose unless the intermittent fault is currently present because some DTCs aren't stored.
I mentioned I'd ordered an OBD2 scanner and would hopefully have it connected next time problem arose. The only concern he had was that a cheap scanner may not offer as comprehensive diagnosis as theirs. He certainly didn't say not to use it.
