Default Removing dried oil off paint.

I drive a 74 xbgt and with those older models, when filled right up with petrol and cornering fast enough the petrol can sometimes leak out of the tank and down the side of the car. This then dries and leaves a black deposit of oil that is damn hard to remove.

Any suggestions?

First of i wished i drove a 74 gt, must be sweet, and yes i can sit with you on the petrol down the side ( had it happen a few times mainly at the pumps )

i think for this i would try the clay bar system and possibly follow with the paint clnr, polish wax.

then once you have it back to showrrom perhaps keep a bottle of quick detail in the boot, so if it happens you can get it ot and minimise / eliminate the damage between washes.

Yeah, the pumps is another bugger with these cars. If the pump pumps the petrol too fast it can fill up the filler tube and come out the top spraying you and the side of the car. Gotta fill her up slowly.

It happens fairly frequently so is the clay system something that can be used regularly?

I doubt a clay bar will do much at all for you as it's designed to remove contaminates that sit above the paint and or clear coat. Fuel being a liquid can get in between the imperfections in the clear coat / paint so it won't be above the surface. I also wouldn't suggest using a clay bar more than twice a year at the most.

I'd suggest using a paint cleaner or very mild swirl remover. Follow this with a sealant to lock it all in. You are probably better off putting a wax above this as well to act as a slick surface that can be sacrificed when the fuel runs over it.

I think the best way to clean petrol based stains such as petrol, oil & tar is with a solvent based product such as a tar remover.

The petrol & solvent will remove any wax or sealant you had on there pretty quickly so remember to keep applying after you've cleaned it up but make sure you clean the surface well before hand as you don't want to seal the petrol to your paint with a wax.
