Default kh laser surging

Hi

Driving my brothers 94 KH laser 1.6 carby. Driving along it’s not too bad, until I downshift from 4th to 3rd, the car will start surging, bunny hope and can hear a bit of popping under the bonnet, this while doing 35kmh, if I downshift again to 2nd its all good and I can up shift to 3rd. It’ll also sometimes does it if I down shift from 3rd to 2nd and ill have to go back to 1st.

Also, at times, in the driveway idling, I put my foot flat on the accelerator to give it a quick rev, it’ll cough and splatter but eventually pick up the revs, it’ll do this once or twice and then it’ll rev fine.

I’ve replaced the fuel filter and it was full of crap, i suspect it hasn’t changed for a while, this improved it slightly, but the problem is still there.

Can anyone offer any help? I’ve checked the timing and that seems to be alright.

check your plugs and leads, my 1.6i was doing the same, put a different set of plugs in now i have no issue, so im going to replace the plugs with new, and the leads have rub marks on them too!. clean the throttle body out ( open the butterfly and clean any oil from around there. clean the air filter. and possibly check the power wires going to the coil. HTH
