27meg on sideband will get some distance, but only if conditions are right.

UHF is ok with the repeaters for distance, take them away they are not much better than the old AM rigs.
Remember repeaters are not every where & I do travel all over Australia to know this.

Agreed, but on the flat (think Hay plains, Moree, outback Qld etc) they will cover around a 30km radius

Showing my age,posting hear,still have a Uniden president grant 40 chanel u/lsb,not sure where the arial is,just cbf mounting it up in the ute.

Agree, you be quite surprised how both types (uhf & am/ssb) can work out in the open outback with little or no interference from civilization.

As I've spent >43 years driving around most of Oz I don't think I'd be that surprised

Old post I know but 27Mhz CB radios has had resurgence in the last few years, Skip is common now with many contacts interstate and overseas, getting Hawaii & the States most days.
