As mine were stiff from the factory, like the Kiwi's do with more personal stiff objects, I keep my ute's hinge pins regularly lubed with a Lanolin oil (from a spray can rather than direct from the sheep) and so far it's stayed rust free and smoothly working.

Just completed a big trip in the ute to Brisbane - about 1400kms round trip.

It went well.

Fuel consumption mid 7s to mid 8s.

Qld has **** roads and **** drivers.

Finally passed thru a squillion kms of roadworks and hit the motorway at 110kms/h. I noticed the ute developed a high pitched whine. I deduced it was the Cheap Chinese tyres or the diff. Merle Haggard fixed that.

Ten minutes later, traffic on the motorway stopped. Then we were up to 60, back to 20, up again, brake, stop - and on it went.

At least the locals know how to traverse roadworks. They were never ending with speed limits of 40, 60, 80,100. On the trip home I was in a convoy with a truck leading and we sat on 80 regardless of what the road works speed limit said. In most of these places there was no actual work going on.

But back to the ute.
Seats good over long journeys.
Standard audio is OK.
I think the muffler is on its way out, it rattles a lot but it doesn't seem to affect performance or economy.
5 speed auto - I was a little reluctant to buy the ute because of this, but because it only had 60,000kms for a 2008 model it was too good to pass up. It does need some getting used to. The ute accelerates very well changing gears at 5,500 revs and sounding really nice with non standard exhaust. At 100kms/h revs are at 1600. When accelerating after cruising I was initially pressing the pedal too far and the gearbox would change back about 7 ratios so I soon was able to push the pedal a little bit and it would only go back one gear.

I am quite happy with the ute.

Did I tell youse that the turning circle is ****?

Most of the chicks I encountered were in their 70s.

This is the reason I went to Brisbane.

Modesty prevents me from identifying myself except to say that I wear sunglasses so the chicks won't recognise me.

Good Economy there mate...the lowest i can get mine down to is in the 10's on the Highway.

Must be the Auto Trany that makes the difference, or how heavy the right foot is!

On the topic of hinges mine also have a bit of rust on them at the pivot point...im yet to hit that with my dremel and repaint and use some lanolin as aussie suggested. Seems a common thing on these utes.

Mines out by about .3L/100km - reads optimistic.

I've been using Fuelly over the last couple thousand KM to keep track

https://www.fuelly.com/

Once you've done three full fills it starts giving you statistics.

Franco, and others...how many people/drivers are that fanatical they will calculate to the inth degree?

There are so many factors, road/air temperature, wind, traffic conditions etc
I do the same open road trip 3-4 times a week and can vary 3L/100K

Mine doesn't seem to vary overly much - these two are the same trips Monday-Friday over two fills, mostly country highway and a touch of freeway.

This included a 407KM commute across country highway, some Melbourne freeway and a touch of suburbia, usually my daily commute is only about 110km

Given I flog the crap out of my daily at every given opportunity, it's not bad for a clapped out ****box with 200,000km

I've only started tracking, 4 fills so far it's going to be interesting over a full year to see what I spend on fuel, Ive never really given it much thought (drive to work, car needs fuel, fill it when it needs to be filled).

I used to always do the manual calculation on fills out of curiosity, doesn't really vary much from 5.8L/100km since I've owned it except for recently, from when it was new to 200,000km+ later.

Be interesting to get data from others with different cars and commutes, or people with bigger cars like Falcons on similar commutes where we're just cruising along country highways.

I think “5thFordWA” keeps a pretty meticulous ledger of all vehicle costs. You could certainly put your daily’s mileage (via Fuelly) up against his records.
