My cat can beat my computer, when I drop her she always lands on her feet. The computer doesn't.

Yeh, Microsoft is one of the main problems here.
They do not like people being quick, and effective. They want everyone to slow down. It's like computers are now shopping malls. Adverts etc.
But, it is all optional. A lot of this stuff can be avoided. Nobody is forcing you to kiss Bill Gates ***.

Exactly my point. Just bought a new Dell laptop to replace the Toshiba that sh*t itself. The popup adds that appear don't have any bearing on history because there is no history. It doesn't stop the 'russian girlfriend' adds etc which is what I was alluding to.

My 3 year old Clevo has had flakey wifi for a couple of weeks.

Last weekend it had no wifi at all.

Oh well, nothing lasts forever and it was due for a bit of lovin'.

Formatted and reinstalled Win10 - nope
Tried Ubuntu - nope
Tried Win7 - nope
Tried Mint - nope

Pulled the back off it and removed the wifi card. Down to local MSY who don't stock laptop wifi cards...

Trip to the more distant Umart - yep, got one.

Installed new wifi card - nope, no wifi

Thinking that I was about due for a new laptop anyway...

Last look around - see a mention of Fn11 on Clevos.

Yep, that did it.

Note to self - research properly!

And there's those people too. We like to call them the tin hat brigade.

We have privacy statements across the board, you decline, you get locked out. For some very strange reason because we keep only your name and user ID on a proprietary system, we are keeping every little tidbit of info about you.

Funnily enough, you freely give much, much more information about yourself when you first get a position and have done so for decades. So why would you think by us keeping a name and user ID we have absolute access to your soul?

Also, check the permissions you also agree to when you install Facebook and Messenger on a mobile device. They basically have access to your entire life.

If you don't like the T&C of what you are using, don't use it.

Next.

As we dawn to the end of September it just dawned upon me that it is 20 years since I got my first internet connection at home in Sept 1997. I'd hate to think how many hours I have wasted on computers since that time. This time does not include playing games nor using computers at work. And now I have a bloody smartphone I have access to a computer 24/7.

How I yearn for the old days.

Exactly why I have never used either. Be careful when you are using that broad paint brush.

Except for social media sites (FB, etc), most sites, if all they track is your UID and PW, are not too much of an issue onto themselves. They still pose issues.

Assuming you are not using a proxy or reverse proxy server, all sites you sign up to also have your IP address (even though most ISP users rely on DHCP to assign the IP address, this address remains static for extended periods of time), with your IP address they know your geographic location and ISP, they also know your MAC address, your time zone and depending on the site, various aspects of your browser and beyond within your system.

You can be as careful as you want when providing data, but you can not stop a site from gathering the above info and selling it.

Then you have outfits like google (just an example of 1 of many) that try to track online activities. Some browsers allow you to turn off tracking, but in the end that means squat to the outfits that want your data and, of course sell.

I used to support a project on a "closed" military installation. We were required to take a security test every month. The tests would pose various scenarios then quiz you on various aspects of the scenarios and how you would respond. Sometimes certain scenarios were re-used, but tweaked. One situation had you in your hotel room and some terrorists break in. I picked what I thought was the best answer as to whatI should do and I died. A year later I came across the same situation and chose the second best answer and I died again. Same for 3rd year and 4th year and I died again each time. The point being, sometimes you just shouldn't be in a situation in the first place.

Apologies, I forgot about this.
