Default Mk2 difference between 2ltr and 1.6ltr

He guys just wondering what the differences between the 2.0 and the 1.6ltr appart form capacity. Diff, gear box, engine bay, suspension, interion etc. basically how much difference is there in the streangth. planning on building a 2 door manual with the 2.3??? serria 5 speed and an lsd or stronger diff setup. Would it be easier to do this with a 2ltr car or does it make no difference.
thanks heaps

There is bugger all difference btwn a Mk 2 1600 shell and a Mk 2 2lt shell. The diff ratio is 3:77 compared to 3:54 in the 2lts. The gearbox ratios are the same (but you are swapping to 5 speed anyway.) The US 2.3lt pinto is quite different to the 2.0lt pinto we have here in Aust, so parts might be expensive to source.....The best option when building a car is to get the best, rust free shell you can find and fit the components onto that. You might want to get hold of a pre-pollution (1975-76) Mk 2 shell as you can run a twin weber set-up and still register it. After the 27a ADR regs came in you had to run all the pollution gear just to get a RWC, so the early shells are like gold for street cars. My old "Mad Mex" with 2lt full-on race engine was based on a 1.3lt car and was 100% street legal.

So would you say that i should just use a 2.0ltr and add mods that engine. Also is the seirra 5 speed a bolt on part? and is the 1.6ltr diff strong enough?
thanks heaps

I remember talking to a guy a few years ago who owned a MK 1 coupe with a worked 2.0 Pinto and he had MK 11 RS2000 seats in it. He told me they went straight in without any mods because the floor pans are identical between the 2 models.
