Default Cable killed 2 iPhones

Hi, i recently purchased a cable for my BA falcon.

http://www.asllogistics.com/product....1&cat=0&page=1
this one to be specific.

I've already sent the iPhones back to apple and they will probably replace them, i also rang up ASL and they are sending me a new cable, however im a bit worried about plugging any iPod's or iPhones into the new cable in case it happens again. Surely apple would start blaming me if im sending back more phones.

Anyway has anyone had this problem, should i maybe get something different, does the BA falcon get spikes in the voltage which could kill them?

Anyway any help would be much apretiated.

I suppose i should add that the iphone goes completely blank, cant charge it, cant switch it on, cant do anything, its like its totally fried.

And when i say has anyone had this problem i mean has anyone reading or have ASL encountered this at all .

After doing some research, I remember reading this a while ago and forgot.

The iPhone 3g/s got rid of 12v charging as it was only used with firewire which is no longer being used as USB takes over completely. After reading about a few people who have had problems with generic car chargers and when they plug it into this or an old dock which charges with 12v they get the same message i was getting, something along the lines of this accessory is not supported do you want to turn on flight mode etc. I never took notice of this and just ignored it as it worked anyway.

Now im assuming that the accessory power that this cable plugs into is 12v, and what others say about charging off 12v which is it overheats and then dies sounds basically what happened to me.

Now im thinking i might just go fork out the cash for a normal iPod (i was trying to find a second hand one cos i only need the unit itself and it will live in the car), and if it also dies.. send it back under warranty and rip it all out and try something else :(.

Anyway, would you guys at ASL automedia please look into this as the advertising says supports iPhones and if its going to kill peoples iPhones there needs to be some warning. Plus i would love some confirmation on my findings.

Thanks for your help.

edit: I just noticed the description says 5v charging, so i don't know, maybe you guys do .

Thats a strange one, although in my opinion, any cigarette lighter power connecter should convert the voltage down to the correct level for the iphone/ipod. Ive got a cheap and nasty one in my car, and had no problems. hmm very wierd

I too have a cheap charger I've used heaps. It doesn't state what voltage it outputs. Bit worried about using it now. Anyway I just brought a nano to Velcro to my dash instead so I'll probably put the new cable in that's being sent and see how that goes.

These are 5v Charge, if you can return the cable to us and we will look into further, we have even induced power spikes into this cable to try and simulate if it would fry a iphone but we have been unable to do so. Can you returm to us with a note and I will try to see what we can do. Will supply the boosted version for helping us.

Thank you for your help, the new cable has already been sent i have to go pick it up this afternoon. A guy at jaycar checked out the cable for me and he believed there may have been a short and when he connected it up to a power supply it almost welded the cable to the battery terminal. Not sure how much he knows as i was just going by his word and he may have screwed up and broke it even more which might be problematic to finding out what was wrong with it in the first place.

Anyway i will still send it back, and I have a friend who wants me to order him a cable as well, a bonus booster would still be nice .
