2017 Porsche Macan priced under $80k

German brand adds new entry-level Macan SUV

2 December, 2016

Andrew Maclean

2017 Porsche Macan

The entry price into Porsche's playground just became a bit more affordable.

The German car maker confirmed it has added a new entry-level model to its Macan SUV range that is priced from $76,610 (plus on-road costs), making it the cheapest Porsche since 1985 when the 944 cost just under $50k.

The simply-named Macan is unique among the range in that is powered by a 2.0-litre four cylinder turbo engine, whereas existing models have a V6 in either petrol or diesel configurations.

2017 Porsche Macan

It is the same engine as that used among a variety of models in the Volkswagen group, including the latest-generation Audi A4 and the Q5 SUV which the Macan shares its basic underpinnings with. In the Porsche, it produces 185kW of power and 370Nm of torque, which is enough to launch it from 0-100km in 6.7 seconds (or 6.5 seconds when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono package) and on to a top speed of 229km/h all the while consuming a claimed average of 7.4L/100km of premium unleaded.

Like all other Macan variants, the entry-level model has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive transmission as standard.

It will also come equipped with a generous list of features, including lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, tri-zone climate control, leather and Alcantara trim, tyre pressure monitoring and Porsche's latest infotainment system that includes a reverse camera, sat nav, digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring.

The Macan is visually identified from its higher-grade siblings with black highlights on the window strip and brake callipers, but otherwise doesn't look like a base model as it wears the same 19-inch alloy wheels as the $93,100 (plus on-roads) Macan S that sits above it.

The 2.0-litre Macan is officially on-sale now with first local deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2017.

Am I reading the article wrong?

Cheapest since 1985 when the cheapest was just under $50k.

So, in 1986 the cheapest jumped to $80k plus?

From Wiki the 944 jumper 3kW in 1986:

US 1982-1985: 143 hp (107 kW)
US 1985-1987: 147 hp (110 kW)

that's 10 grand per Kilowatt

What? That would be $1.1 mil for a 944??? I think your maths need a bit of work.

But the little Porsche was very spirited back then, consider the big 5.8L XE was pumping out a massive 149kW..

I like the look of it.

Realistically though at $76.5k the on-roads are going to push it well over 80.

And for my way of thinking, that money is buying you the Porsche badge, not Porsche performance.

If I had the cash and was into that type of vehicle I’d at least take a serious peek at it.

I was talking about the price increase, not the Total....

Good looks...but if Porsche can sell this at that price, what stopping them dropping the price on the Boxter or Cayman?
