Default Escort MK2 information

Hey fellas,

Im looking into buying a MK2 escort 2 door of one of my mates for cheap and i just got a couple questions about them.

Its got the 2 liter engine at the moment but i was wonder if it possible to fit a different engine in without 2 much troubles. I know a v8 wont fit but i was thinking along the lines of an rb30 or sumthing simmilar. what you guys think?

Anyone know how much the 2doors weigh?

And anything i should look out when i get to look at it closer.

v8's will fit, but wont be able it registered.
rb30 is too long.

yeah was measuring it up just then.

v8 will fit? wow thats crazy. links to any1 whos done it?
what other engines should i be looking at?

i was checking the car out b4 aswell, not in too bad nic, need alot of TLC and a spray job.

check out this site www.classicford.mine.nu pretty much any questions will be answered there.

a few of the guys have put sr20's in their escorts but not sure about rb30's.

i think 2 doors are about 900-1000kgs. not too sure though

look for internal rust. open the boot and look at the rear quater panels from the inside. rust hides away up there.

950kg kerb weight.

Check for rust in the plenum (middle of firewall directly behind engine) - the rubber drain blocks up easy and the whole firewall can get infected.

Also bottom of "C" pillars is a high risk rust area.

If you want a Nissan motor why not just go and buy a Nissan? LOL

hey shinrar...

depends what you want to use the car for??? track/drags/drift/road

i am currently to a sr20det motor into a 78 2dr, and as has already been mention go to www.classicford.mine.nu you'll find everything there

I think the sr is a good conversion and motor is not to heavy parts are everywhere!! and not to much modifying...except engine mounts/trans tunnel and the usual stuff but easy to mod this engine with off the shelf parts.

hey guys thanks for replys,

ill be picking the escort up in a couple weeks, and start restoring it then. Its not in to bad nick, it needs alot of attention though cus its been sitting for a while. First thing ill do is strip the car down and start the respray process, ive resprayed my current car (vl) which turned out pretty good, but now i know all the tricks and what not to do, should turn out good as.

yeah ive been looking at the sr20det, not bad i reckon. Any1 done a 6cylinder conversion? the cross flow?


I wanna fast street car, not too fast though ahaha.

any straight six cylinder will be too long - unless you take to the firewall with the oxy. any of the smaller V6s (up to 4.0 litres) will fit pretty easy.

if u want a fast street car.. jus stick with the 2.0

a 2.0 with 5 speed and big cam, dual webers, overbore etc etc will easily smoke like commodores and such...

oh and a 4.11 diff aswell maybe.

are you in your p's or past that?

cuz turbo 2 litres are like the poor mans cosworth, but they have power and ltos of it..

an sr20, v6 any large motor with over 150 hp will definately be a weapon.

try to find the equivilant to a holden 3.8 v6, they are sweet compact motors but it would be weird to have a holden motor in a ford wouldnt it.

well good luck with whatever u choose to go with!

ps about the rb motor

i saw a mk1 with a skyline motor once, there had to be a large section cut oout of firewall and the upper section was heavily deepened. nto sure if it affected the interior or not.

Yeah im on my p's which means no blue plates!!! :(
but i didn't really care if i couldn't drive it for a while.
Yeah ill seriously consider doin up the orignal 2Litre, i know all about carbies though im more a fuel injection person... guess ill be doin sum research.

how quick you reckon carby 2Ltr can go (heavily modded)? (1/4 mile times)

um, if memory serves me, it had a 30 thou overbore, large cam, valves done, ports polished, twin webers or dellortors or something, balanced bottem end, light flywheel, 2 1/2 exhaust, adjustable cam wheel, sierra 5spd, and that was in full street trim on street tyres.

the 2.0 is an amazing engine! can take a beating.

do a compression test, see if the engine burns oil, if it ever backfires, how the throttle response is etc.. before considering doing up the motor.

its cuz there so damn light mine is only 950kg or so.

also if u plan on racing it at all, and if its on dirt or such get a lsd or weld ur diff up, the escorts get serious traction problems on dirt and gravel ( if pushed hard )

before anything though, drive the car around alot, i found my standard 2 litre to be entertaining! but still, i upgraded after and got a crane cam, ported head, large valves etc hehe

im prolly gunna rebuild the engine straight up with everything i want in it, as ill be respraying it so that will take along time.

hopefully picking it up in 2 weeks, then the stripping begins follow by alot of sanding

You CAN fit a windsor 289 or 302.

You can fit a windsor 351, but you will need to put a big hump in the bonnet to allow for the extra height.

you CANNOT put a clevo in there, too wide.

Depending on what state you are in, you may be able to do it, but it will require a LOT of engineering and will be expensive.

Sr20's or ca18 turbos are good,

Cosworth or BDA engine would be better because you can still enter it in cams affiliated races as they are ford motors.

If you dont ever want to race seriously though, i would say put a 13b turbo rotary in it. Have seen a few eskies with them before that pulled low 11's

rotary swaps are easy to do aswell, because the motor is small in size ( from the outside)

there are a couple fitted with blown clevos

some well known ones from

MD conversions in NSW mark at Blacktown 96717508

but as said above cant be registered with them anymore

any firewall mods these days will prevent most conversions from being started

and again if your car has the ADR 27a or higher on the tag then there is less you can do

again it depends on what you are going to use the car for

cosworths are hugely expensive here in Oz

if funds are tight just mod your pinto to your budget

years and years ago at calder street meets a regular runner there in a red mk1 escort

was in the 10.6s running a highly modded turbod pinto owner Nik S.

YOU CAN stick a cleveo in them the eingine bay is wide enough but the firewall needs a masive amount of work
forget doing a 6cyl or v8 coversion
stick with the pinto or a sr both are easy to get parts you wont upest the handling of the car and even a mild na pinto will surprise you

Sterling, you are right about the Pinto taking a beating and if done right, the can get some serious bhp! A mate has done most of the work on his Pinto and got 197rwbhp! Twin 45's, Kent cam, electronic ignition.
