Default Noise at startup

Hey guys

I have this noise when the car starts, like a sort of repeating knocking/tonking noise for like 2 seconds then u dont hear it again, until the next time u start it.

Any idea wat it could be?

cheers

Might be worth checking to see if the exhaust/manifold is touching the sump at startup. I had this happen to my AU annoyed the heck out me, only ever happened at start up and not all start ups. Turns out when it had heat in it, it moved away from the sump. Might be something completely different to this but if it helps relieve some frustration then its worth it.

Mine had an odd knocking noise at cold start up when I was using a Z9 oil filter. Ever since I started using a Z89A (stubby Z9, about half the length) it hasn't been there. Btw I've found that mine actually runs better on Nulons 10w synthetic oil.

My non-XR8 AU V8 does a similar thing everytime I change the oil. Takes about a week and it stops doing it until the next time the oil is changes. When it was still in warranty I asked the dealer about it everytime I picked it up from the service and they just said it's within normal tolerences. As it's done it since 2002 I suppose it's not terminal.

I might try the Z89A trick next oil change though? (oil gets changed every 7500km)

Well mines sorta did the opposite. I change the oil and it dosent do it at all now. Odd.

Thats because 220's run a Z89 ya goose, you're not supposed to put a Z9 on there! Itd be sucking too much oil into the filter cos its bigger than a Z89 hence the knocking noise.

220's run the Z89 cos of the oil cooler, 200's run Z9's.

i forget wat filter i used was. But apparantly there are 2 different one. One for xr8 with oil coolers and one with out. ! is almost twice as big as the other. Now i have the shorter of the 2 on my 200kw and im not sure which one it is? But its the same size filter that was on it before and the noise has stopped?? Does any one know what filter i may have??

I don't think the size of the filter makes any difference on oil pressure.

In layman's terms, the bigger the filter, the longer you can leave it in between changes (a bigger filtration area to collect crap). It might take a little more oil to keep the levels up, but unless it's protruding on exhaust pipes because of the extra size, it shouldn't be a problem.

If youve got the smaller one you have the Z89 on there, the Z9 is a reasonable sized filter. Z9 should be put on 200kw models and Z89 is for 220kw models with the oil cooler (youll see the lines for the cooler coming off where the filter screws on).

swanny i get what youre saying but personally i always use the filter specified, but each to their own.

The only reason the 220 runs the Z89 is because of the clearance issue with the cooler, something fixed when my engine was out.

I didn't think it would affect start up pressure either, I was the biggest sceptic of all. I was proven wrong and have been told the same by Ford and by a number of workshops, G&D included.

as a mech i can be sure that noise your hearing is your crank bearings not getting oil pressure as soon as they should, with ford engines make sure you use a good quality oil filter preferably genuine as they have a valve in them that prevents oil loss out of filter when engine is off. my 6cyl au did the same thing when i bought it and it had one of those cheap and nasty oil filters on it, changed oil and put genuine filter on and no more probs cheers..

As this thread is 14 years old, and in an AU forum, you may do better asking in the FG forum.
