Default 1988 Laser fuel leak

Hi Ford-Folks,

My son inherited his nanna's 1988 Laser Ghia 1.6. When it starts there is often a smell of raw fuel, I've had several looks around the engine once its warm but can't see any leaks.

Today I found the leak and it is coming from this cylindrical metal thing that looks like a fuel filter (but isn't) which sits under the passenger side of the air cleaner. The fuel line goes to it and there seem to be a couple of breather pipes or something. It leaked pretty bad but only for a minute or so after starting.

Got any ideas?

Pressure regulator ?????? Should be a pretty easy & cheap fix.

Der.. ok I could see in the light that its a mechanical fuel pump. Strange thing is that is doesn't leak at all when the engine is warm. I wonder if, when its cold, the bypass leaks as it tries to send excess fuel back to the tank.

It could be that the rubber diaphragm inside the pump doesn't flex well when cold, thus letting fuel out one of the breather pipes, but then becomes more pliable when it warms up.
I had a very similar problem with a Daihatsu I used to drive.
