Default I'm a bit disappointed...

Well, as the above says, I feel a bit hard done by. I got the Petroleum Engineer and not the Marine Biologist. What is he on about, you’re asking? Well.

As a lot of you may know, selling a car through carsales.com.au is a great way to advertise you pride and joy. Although it annoys the hell out of me when I hear of scams of people trying to, well, basically steal my hard earned.
My brother was approached the same way as I was not 6 months ago, when he was selling his car on the website. While I’m not having a go at the website, it is a great facility for my intentions; I can’t comprehend the idiocy of some people in this world.
All I’m trying to do with this thread is just send a plain and simple warning about this particular scam, which I nor my brother got caught up in.
I placed my car for sale, and the very next morning was emailed.

“ The following Private Vehicle Enquiry was generated by carpoint.com.au:

Enquiry ID: 4132422
Date: 25/02/2010 09:29

Name: phillip
Town/Suburb: Near ABERFELDIE
Postcode: 3040
Mobile Phone: 0435793402
Email: phillipthompson200@gmail.com
Comments:
Hi seller is your car still for sell,i will like to purchase it please get back to me with the history and service of the car. Thanks”

First of all, the gramma is terrible and doesn’t seem like a legitimate interest, but I replied none the less, not knowing yet of the actual circumstances of “phillip”.
I haven’t called the supplied phone number, but did reply to what i thought was a fairly legit gmail address.

Anyway, wait 6 days after I replied & this email surfaces.

“thanks for mailing back please i will like to know the firm price you are willing to sell this car?.i am a petroleum engineer and i am on rig right now.i am buying this as a birthday gift for my son,i've been trying to reach you but i discovered that our phone is currently scrambled due to the bad weather please bear with me .I can only pay through paypal at the moment as i dont have access to my bank account online, but i have it attached to my paypal account and this is why i insisted on using paypal to pay,all i will need is your paypal email address to make the payment,if you dont have a paypal account yet,set up one at www.paypal.com.au,i will be expecting your email regarding it.I have a pick up agent who will come for the pick up after i might have sort out the payment.”

I knew straight away this was a scamming email, and have not replied and left it at that. A quick read of the websites warnings, and it stuck out like dogs ba**s as being a waste of time.

Don’t fall for this crap.
I hope none of you have already.

End vent.

I had a ball with a similar douche...... Just enjoy the irony.

Phone number I was given was from a woman in QLD...

Postcode didn't exist......

I asked if they had driven the newer model cars with a clevo... and they said their had a friend with one....

Have some fun with the bastard!

Hi mate,

Cant remember the exact details, but it works something like:

They need $2000 to cover some agent fee, then the agent pays the final figure to you.

But the agent never arrives.

Something like that, you get sucked in to giving a relatively (compared to the car) small amount of money over, so to cover some wierd fee on their end, and you will never see it back again.

Am bored at uni. Something I thought would help others.
:

Also, a bit more info.
The car is advertised through carsales, consequently it is shown on carpoint. I got an email from a carpoint enquiry.

Yeah, go nuts.

Although, I would bet the phone number is of some unknown person with a life. So probably good to leave the phone number alone.

You'd have to be a few beers short of a 6 pack to fall for it though

lol, not quite a scam, but when I was selling the Mrs festiva, I had some douche email me telling me he wanted the car and was prepared to pay me 1/2 of what it was advertised for. this was because he though that was all he was prepared to pay for a car, and it would cost HIM money for rego (car had 12 mths with it), roadworthy (not to mention he told me what was wrong with it.....without looking at the car) + insurance, etc.
I emailed him back telling him his offer was hilarious, does he have any other jokes he can tell me. then he emails me back offering 3/4 of the advertiesd price. telling me he worked as a car salesman for 20yrs and knew more about cars and selling cars than I did so I should take his advice and sell him the car.
It was at this point I told him to stop wasting my time and (politely of course) to go away.

I had 3 or 4 of these emails over the 3 months i was trying to sell my Falcon. Carsales email you every time you receive an email from them saying it's a scam. Each i time i got the email from the scammers i wrote a nice little "F&^% Off SCUM" message back.

They've moved rom Nigeria to the high seas! I have access to a fantastic website about a guy who strings the Nigerian scammers along. I won;t post a link, the contents are a bit grown up for some, but PM me and I'll give you some details.

I like old fashioned transactions, you come and see me and then give me some money.

Also receieved something similar on carsales. They reply back in 6 days, as thats how long it takes them to go through the 10,000s of emails they send out.
What gets them first up is always the dodgy grammer.

Not that I'm suggesting it, but the scam could be run a lot more effectively than that... I mean the whole PayPal spiel gives them away if they did it over a few emails might be a little less obvious.

Anyway, good luck with the sale

Sounds like the guy that rang about our GT, told me it was not worth what we wanted and I should take the $18k that he offered because "thats all I can afford and I want a fully sick car mate".
Did your guy have the "fully sick" lebanese accent? (no racism intended, just a observation about his voice)

He would not take no for an answer and argued for ages. I could not get him off the phone until I refused to give my address so that he could have a look at it. I told him I was not interested in him buying it, he will not be allowed to see it and no chance he will drive it. When I said this he abused me and said I was a moron for not taking his offer and I would never sell it. It was sold 2 days later :
