Default Server availability issues

As you will no doubt be aware, we have been experiencing some random down time during the period since the server rebuild.

At the moment we have gathered sufficient data to know what is happening and now will analyse that data to determine the why.

Fundamentally it is a repeat of the process we went through after the last rebuild where it is necessary to configure the various server parameters so that we end up with settings that suit the load and usage patterns of this server and there is no real way to achieve this other than trial and error.

We have already made a number of changes that have had some impact but it is clear that there is still yet a way to go before we reach the optimal configuration - as a rough guide it took about six weeks last time as you can only make one change at a time and then need to wait 48 hours to see if it helps.

During this period we would appreciate your patience and understanding.

Regards
Russ

There will be some interruptions this evening as we go through configuration changes.

These interruptions will be for a minute or two each time as we make the change, restart apache and fix any errors the change causes!

Cheers
Russ

Great work Russ, I know only too well that application hosting and host tuning can be tedious at the best of times.
I'm sure I can speak for many when I say all your work is MUCH appreciated.

Your dedication to resolving this issue is simply outstanding russellw.

I am sure you will work it all out soon. These things just take time. At least people can still view the forums and can get their fix!

Thanks again for all your efforts

We will be continuing the testing tonight following the server overloads at 17:30 and 19:30. This will mean numerous apache restarts throughout the evening although none of them should be for more than a minute or two. My aim is to get these done before the usual dramas at around 21:30 appear.

Cheers
Russ

Good work guys, I know nothing about these things you speak of - servers, configuration, blah blah, blah, but I do know it sucks *** when I can't get the site up. Happens a lot to me lately.

I appreciate the effort you guys are going to to fix the apparent unreliability, and truely wish I could help.

best regards

texas,

I thought it was just my connection playing up when I couldn't load AFF at times. Good to know it isn't. Russell is doing an awesome job as the downtimes seem to be less frequent now (for me anyway).

If ya need server help, feel free to PM me.

UPDATE

Thanks to some good observation by Laminge and a little bit of data analysis we may now have a handle on the root cause of the performance issue.

Some further testing of this will be conducted throughout the day tomorrow but any outages caused by that testing will be of very short duration.

If the testing proves out as expected then the issue will likely be resolved with no interruption to the forum.

Cheers
Russ

It would seem that the issues are now resolved.

Thanks to those who assisted or offered assistance and to everyone for their patience during this somewhat trying time.

Cheers

I had noticed some lag the last few days but figured you were having woes with configurations. Sometimes I had to wait a little longer to browse around but, that's ok.

Thanks to RussellW and Cohorts for the detailed effort.

Well done Russell! It appears to be running like a dream

You have once again pulled out all the stops to assist the masses. Hopefully this weekend you will have some time for yourself and family etc..

Amazing...so many people were complaining when it was down...and yet when it is time to show appreciation...You can hear crickets!!
