Default ED XR6 Cam Versus EL GLi cam

So I've got a ED XR6 head sitting here but bolting it on will bust my $1300 budget. Or I could just pinch the cam from the head and fit that to my EL Falcon for a cheap upgrade and stay under budget.

It's all sitting here, so I don't have to actually purchase anything.

Or should I just say screw the budget and bolt the XR6 head on.

I wanted to see just how fast I could go at Heathcote at the AFFDD while staying under budget.

Opinions?

Unsure what the ED XR6 head brings to the table

Pretty sure a simple bolt on will lower compression but unsure of the valve size compared to el also unsure about the cam

Will do some research and get back to you unless some one else updates before hand

Slightly bigger exhaust? valves and a slightly diffferent shaped combustion chamber?

From what I can remember anyway. At least it was on the later SOHC XR6's.

You have proven the 13 for 1300, I say screw the budget.

Throw it on with a bigger cam, regrinds are cheap and work well. See what you can do for a few extra hundred. Is it running the stock stall? It sounds like it.

From my understanding it has larger exhaust valves and maybe some other features as mentioned above.

Ya, larger exhaust valves and has the valve bosses removed, for memory its just the valve guide that protrudes into port instead of a large casting boss.

The chamber has a slight nick out of the corner, almost like it was a 3.9 swirl head that had been lopped out.

Yeah, the stall is one of my bigger hurdles at the moment. It gets going but still feels lazy off the line. If I can pick one up cheap I'll throw it in.

And you're right, it was always 13s for $1300, and I did that and did it pretty easy. I'm never going to match the Commodore crew that did 12.49 for $900 (and killed the motor doing it).

I'm interested to see what the car can do for an extra $700 or so.

I have seen stalls going for $400 now for modified TCI. Mate just got one but I haven't fitted it yet and see how it actually goes. Its still a decent whack of money though when the final budget has $700 remaining.

I had the same issues with lazyness, you still 60ft better than I did with twice the power and a 2500 stall.

I don't know if using a XR cam is worthwhile, they still are small. Something like a 977B, I think they will run on a standard ECU. Are you looking into a J3 chip and tuning?

J3 chip would be cool, but professional tuning will kill the budget.
