Mechanical Key Cutting Code - Dealers

I’ve read various (and varying) comments on the willingness/ability of a Ford dealer to supply an owner with the mechanical cutting code for their car keys.

Is there an official position on this, or do some simply offer it as a goodwill gesture? If it’s still done, are there any recommendations for Sydney dealers? Would like to get extra HUF keys cut for the Territory, happy to have the blanks machined and the sole original chip cloned.

If you have an existing relationship with a dealer then you'll likely get it without any drama but otherwise I believe the official position is somewhat less cooperative.

I've had a locksmith do a spare set for one of mine at what I thought was a reasonable cost.

Cheers, sounds like (as often) I’ve grabbed the wrong end of the stick.

I’ve got a Plan B, have a contact OS who cuts them from a good photo and they fit perfectly every time. Fairly sure the blade follows same format as Mondeo and some Jaguar.

The Minits I’ve encountered aren’t really what I’d consider specialists, more trained-up all-rounders. Results are to an “acceptable” level, not master or artisan quality.

Don't confuse Mr Minit with other kiosk key places; they also have mobile automotive experts in this field they can call on (well certainly in WA they do and NSW/Sydney does seem to have more of both franchise outlets and mobile services). Perhaps call their support office and see what franchisee it recommends:

I just bought two spare keys and for each of my FG MK2's (an XR6 Ute and an XR6 sedan) today from Mr Minit in Cockburn Gateway Shopping Center in Success WA and can thus confirm that they have magic box that allows them to clone one key and fob to a new one at $250.00 each including cutting the key. Compares well with the ebay price from Jefferson Ford at https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-...wAAOSw1fJetayY and that would still mean paying someone to get the key cut. They don't need to see your car and only one working key and fob is required.

As Russell described above, depending how well you know the dealer, and if you buy an original blank from them may help also.

About 5 years ago I had bought an auction car with no keys, and went as total stranger to one of the Ford dealers in Perth to ask for the key cutting code. I had proof of ownership with me. I was asked to pay a fee of $25 and was then given the cutting code. I took my ebay blank to one of the nearby automotive locksmiths in Perth which cut the key for approx $60 for each key, and it was success. After that the newly cut keys needed programming. It was done by another dealer for a fee. Dealer need minimum 2 keys to do the Ford programming. (Can't be dodgy locksmith clones), but it can be Ebay keys with appropriate chip in them.

You save a bit by doing all the run-around yourself, but it takes your time also, so depends what you have least of.. time... or money..

But having the two original keys for each car it doesn't matter if the start off as clones as I can program them myself per:

where position "l" is "accessories" and position "ll" is "ignition"
