On carsales the V8 is listed as 3500kgs towing.

Even the V6 petrol is 2800kgs. Not sure where 2268kgs is listed. Maybe the 2wd variant.

The overheating Rovers can be sorted with a good local radiator. The pommy stuff has some weird as baffles.

maybe not but looking at the new ones 940kg payload and 6670kg gcm must put it at the top in its class including the lc200.

Yeah I reckon Rangies had a 4T tow rating years ago, which I presume was because they came with big disc brakes on all 4 wheels.Certainly would have been on stopping ability rather than towing capacity.Would have been dangerous in a strong side wind, but I suppose no different to people who reckon it is safe to tow a 3t plus caravan with a Thai special, whilst having a tow vehicle weight of not much more than 2t.Guess that is why there are lots of rolled over big caravans in scrap yards

I'm not convinced any of these cars are suitable to tow 3500kg despite all the advertising hype they push.
2.5T to 3.5T would be only under perfect windless driving conditons with no one else on the road at a lower speeds.
Probably one of the reason fulltimer caravanners like to check out of parks on a Sunday...not many trucks. But they forget the weekend warriors all come out.

Want to tow something that heavy buy a proper truck.

BTW is the Jeep coil sprung at the rear or is it leaf sprung, just wondering.

4T is laughable.
Discos have a short wheel base, high centre of gravity and long rear over hang.
Of all the vehicles rated to tow 3.5 tonne, one of them would be the last on the list.
That’s also not taking into account the hit and miss reliability.
I’d prefer the P38 Range Rover. Which is more sure footed for towing high weights but more unreliable again.

OP maybe consider a Lexus LX470. These are rock solid reliability and build quality. Re sale is strong and they’ve done their all of the depreciation so will hold value.
I have one with one of the mufflers removed and it sounds like a proper V8. It’s a bit gutless though.
Like some Land Cruisers they have active height control (Hydro suspension) and 4 wheel traction control with centre diff lock. 17 or 18 inch wheel so good tyre choice and decent side wall. I have added a Bluetooth module in place of CD stacker so can stream music. Decent stereo with factory amp and sub.
I think Toyota saw what Land Rover did with the 1995 Range Rover and released the 100 series to do everything the RR can but better.

Tare weight 2530
Payload 730
Towing 3500
GCM 6760

Some observation on Grand Grand Cherokee compared to Patrol:
- Patrol looks 10-15% bigger in size.
- Patrol has the option of extended factory warranties (1,2 +3 yrs), Taking it to a maximum of up to 8 yrs. Jeep is 5yrs.

just under 2000kgs tare with just over 1000kg payload for the dmax so assume the rest will be much the same give or take.So you can legally tow a 3.5t caravan with a 2t ute,not this guy !!

Hilux and Ranger are close enough to 2300kg.
Love to put the others on a weigh bridge to see their actual kerb weight.

Nissan quote 1900kg for the Navara, Mercedes quote over 2100kg for their version. I don't think there's an extra 200kg of sound deadener in the merc...

1500
What is with every newbie buying black tow cars and black/grey caravans ?

Have they never freecamped in their lives to know black absorbs the heat in thin insulated caravan. This thing would need AC blowing all summer to keep it cool.
Looks capable of carrying 1.5T in the bed to me but...
On the RAM 1500 in the states 1500 is 1.5T payload, 2500 2.5T payload, 3500 3.5T payload along with Ford, Mercedes, Chevy pick ups and vans, so why is this vehicle so underated here in Oz with a p*ss weak load rating.

Note the nice Prowler 34ft 5th wheeler in the background.

Half tonne, three quarter tonne and tonne? Doesn't make sense but as you go up in numbers the ratings go upwards and the chassis changes.

Oh yeah, forgot about pounds.

But surely a F350 is capable of more, looking at what they carry in the US.

The RAM 1500 Classic in the US has a payload of 1670 lbs which I think is around 750kg. So if I'm not mistaken, the Aussie ones actually have a higher payload rating.

Where would you find the info. On car sales it says they have 735-750kgs payload which is nothing. I find Carsales is usually quite accurate.

It seems way too low since all the Thai utes are good for about a tonne
