Thermoquads were used as original equipment on mostly Chrysler products from 1971 to 1985.
Read up about thermoquads here ... http://www.carbkitsource.com/carbs/t.../TQ-index.html

Yeah i new they were on falcons from late 1976 to 1984,
I own a 1978 Fairmont GXL that i have owned since 1987,
and i had a XD Fairmont Ghia as well,
I can never remember buying a thermoquad,
I have been looking at some of my old parts and in particular the carb off my GXL and this is the only one i can find in my shed at the moment,
From what i can find out is that the carb off my car should be a 9085s.

Had this carbie on several of my 5.8's including the XC 2 door GXL, they were all as factory fitted.
Also during that period, they were standard on the 351C short motors from factory which were used for final fitout to several De Tomaso's (Pantera's, Longchamp's etc) imported as partially build vehicle and finished/built by a well known Sydney dealer - BUT most quads were removed and replaced with Holley D/Pumpers.

Doubt it. I think you'll find that over the last 40 years there may have been multiple owners/multiple changes.

Also, as your vehicle is a '78 model, know that the '78 model F100's changed from a Motorcraft to Carter Thermoquad carbies around April/May (IIRC) 1978. In that, the F Series Thermoquads would have been fitted to the F Trucks only. Also know that the F Series Cleveland engines were different in that they had different heads. In that, assembly would have been different too.

This car has been in the family since new,
I bought the GXL from my father in 1987,
I have had it garaged since 1988,
I striped the car down and had it painted and never got around to putting back together,
And this is the only carb that i can find,
I have kept all the parts together during this time,
I was curios about the numbers as they don't match my car?

The numbers will be on the left rear of the throttle body.

If it's got a black resin "body" then it's a Thermoquad.

AFAIK Thermoquads were fitted to XC Update models onwards Clevelands in Australia? Most people wouldn't recognise them 'cos at the first sign of trouble of an "upgrade" they were replaced with Holleys.

Carter TQ's were fitted to all Aus Ford Cleveland powered cars (Falcon/Fairmont/Fairlane/LTD/F Series) from 1 July 1976 through to August 1685. Only exception is that of the 1976 through to April 1978 Cleveland powered F Series vehicles.

Probably not the case for all the Quads fitted ?, but the resin base was a problem on at least 2 of my 5.8's.

Appears the base would flex slightly ? and when refitted would affect the vacuum reading/tuning between cold n hot running.
After replacing with a new base was all good on both occasions, over the years have heard this was experienced by quite a few others who just gave up and fitted Holley's.

^^^^^^ 100% Correct, although I'm not sure of the build date of the last Aussie-Built F-series with a Cleveland V8. Anyone ??

Dr Terry

P.S. obviously the 1685 is a typo & should be 1985.

Is it true that the 5.8 thermoquads have smaller main jets
compared to the 4.9 to meet emissions.

Were any Aussie F-series built with Aussie Cleveland V8s in 1986 ? If so when was the last one made ?

So if one was to build a 5.8 engine with mild cam
and replace the main jets with the ones from a 4.9
this would obviously be beneficial to performance.

No.

August 1985 was the last Cleveland that went down the line. They simply ran out and already had the 5.0 litre Windsor's being used.

From the Mopar guys:
Quote:
The thermoquad, or TQ for short, was introduced as a high performance unit in 1969. Carters’ first spread-bore carburetor of their own design (remember, they produced Q-Jets under license from GM), the first production came in two sizes: 850 CFM and 1000 CFM. In 1971, these racing units would be detuned for street use and an 800 CFM version was original equipment on Chrysler 340 engines. The only 1000 CFM was the race carburetor. Chrysler used 800 CFM units on the smaller V-8’s, and 850 CFM units on the 440’s. Later, 520 CFM units were released for use on the 318. A total of 428 different thermoquad models were produced.
Which model did the Falcon use?
