UNBELIEVABLE! We have a VOICE in the SENATE.
Congratulations to the AUSTRALIAN MOTORING ENTHUSIAST PARTY. Congratulations to all who united, not only in Victoria, but around the nation. This is only the beginning... I know FF is supposed to non-political but :
Instead of Labor and the Greens being able to form a blocking majority, the Abbott government must deal with the uncertainty of minor party senators, including one or perhaps two from the insurgent Palmer United Party, South Australian Nick Xenophon and an allied candidate, and potentially a Motoring Enthusiast Party senator from Victoria. Amazing. The AMEP and PUP formed only 3 months ago. Now if people only realised the power that they actually hold. How many only voted for the lesser of 2 evils?

It will be seen as a complete fluke, which it was. But as the saying goes "You've got to be in it to win it"
What we really want is to see the numbers for primary votes jump to be a more significant number.

I can assure you now, If Clive Palmer gets up in the seat of Fairfax, the people in that seat wont be seeing any Federal Government road funding for the next 3 years. |

Finally a voice against the rhetoric that is making owning a modified car hard to enjoy in Victoria. Reading through the preference distribution it was a fluke, but very few preferences from the excluded parties went to any of the major parties, it was just a case of the last social justice party standing.
Be interesting to see if they can gain some publicity and add to their numbers in four years. Even moreso can they exert some pressure to make some change!

According to the AEC website it's done.
It took 34 rounds of preferences but Ricky Muir has got up. And better still he and other independents will hold the balance of power. I hope he can use it wisely, no doubt under great pressure from all sides. But in my opinion it's great to have someone represent Motoring Enthusiasts at he big end of town.

Great result, looks like I wasn't the only one to put 1 for AMEP and 97 (last) for Greens.

I like what they have done so far so I voted for them as well
We all complain about what's going on at the moment for motor enthusiasts but we can not all get together to voice our opinion or complain as we are too lazy, can't be bothered, too much hassle UNLESS we personally are the ones being victimized. AMEP will be our voice

This is great news, someone has stood up to be a voice for the minority.
Now, can people please direct their road law anguish to the elected member instead of filling the Forum with paranoia about possible legislation changes that are still up for negotiation. I thought this party would romp in in QLD, the way a small cross section on here complain regularly about road laws etc. |

Car lovers, sports enthusiasts and former sporting greats are likely to help shape the most colourful and fragmented senate in Australian political history.
Olympic hockey gold medallist Nova Peris for the ALP and the Palmer United Party's Australian rugby league great Glenn Lazarus are likely to be sitting with independents like One Nation founder and one-time Dancing with the Stars contestant Pauline Hanson. The new Senate will also include parties as disparate and individualistic as the Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party and the Australian Sports Party. This is because a grouping of 30 parties organised a tight swap of preferences in Saturday's election. Advertisement The man behind the rise of Australia's micro-parties believes the Senate will have 18 members from outside the major parties from July next year. Political consultant Glenn Druery, mastermind behind the Minor Parties Alliance, said the two-party state was now history in Australia http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/bre...908-2tdlp.html

Old Clive will build the roads for them using his own money ,or he might take legal action ,or maybe if they need his party in the senate he will get lots of roads |

While it's good getting _some_ other interests in the senate, with the number of minor parties getting involved it's a dangerous slope. Purely with the number of different parties and the way distribution of preferences work in the senate people can definitely be electing someone they didn't anticipate on the senate ticket.
IE 25 'minor' parties all preferencing each other can get a candidate up with only a _tiny_ primary vote because 95% of people don't care/have the patience to number 90+ candidates on a ballet paper. They want that party to be their first preference but might disagree with the next 76 preference flows. Put a disorganised group in a room all with different interests and ask them to to agree on something.. Can get messy.

Now that the gillard/rudd thing/infighting is over, it will be a completley different story and the balance of power will be more equally divided between Labor and the lnp come the next election....

I have no idea who he is, but I can't help feeling a little sorry for Ricky. I suspect the entire AMEP had no real expectations of senate positions - but of course, you certainly don't win by not trying and a new party has to start somewhere.
A few of Ricky's less fine moments have been dragged out on twitter so far, and I've already seen folk use that to reinforce their attitudes of us all as a bunch of antisocial hoons. I hope the press don't crucify him and pick him up as a laugh-at punching bag like they do to inexperienced pollies... |

Why? Because it shakes up the 2-party system that is thrust upon us? The less people vote for the 2 main bickering parties, the better...people are realising that they do have the power to vote for who they want. Democracy is wonderful.

And some may day that to encourage many differing views is good for democracy.
