Default first ride in a supercharged vehicle

and no it wasn't a Ford.

A guy at work today brought in his '55 Chev to show off to the car enthusiasts in at work. Very tidy show car with all the usuals like dropped on it's guts, custom interior, mint chrome and paint and all that jazz.

what impressed me the most though..... the motor!!! 350 chev with 400 crank, fuel injection, electronic ignition, and a supercharger running about 8 pound boost (capable of 15!!!) all through manual shift :voldar02:

this old girl was very street drivable under 2500rpm, and seemed nothing out of the ordinary except for the constant whir from the supercharger. Once the revs climbed over that 2500rpm mark though, HOLY SH!T it just kicks you back hard in the seat, front end lifts up so the road isn't even visible from in the cabin, wheels let out an almighty screeeech, and the whole chassis strains under the load as the engine roars to life and kicks the car side ways and seems to have a mind of it's own :

a couple of other nice little things which I didn't get to see in action:
- NOS, by geez this has great potential down the 1/4 for such a big car
- Flame Throwers. yep, you heard right, flame throwers. it's setup so the A/F ratio is richened up a heap and has spark plugs about 4 inches away from the end of exhaust tips, seperate coils to fire the spark.

I've got to get a sunday driver and get me some serious power on day, derived from a Ford powerplant of course!!!

now have to get this other bloke to bring the '72 Aston Martin quad cam all alloy V8 in for show and tell :

Got any jobs up for grabs? I could be a courier in the said Chev ;) ;)

Or since your XC seems to be the "economy" car there (on LPG), perhaps I can drive that around everywhere doing errands & stuff lol

You lucky mongrel! I wanna ride in a blown car...

i wouldn't have thought so (might be wrong though), it's kind of illegal. Foot long flames out twin exhausts would look damn sweet though, a necessity for all vintage muscle

would possibly cost a little too much as a courier car.

patience Dave, soon you will be that lucky mongrel who's daily driver is a blown car.

something else that was mentioned which i didn't realise. Superchargers aren't always providing boost to the motor, even though they are always driven off the crank. It's not until the throttle plates open that the boost begins, correct? And the boost guage only showed a notable level of boost at about 2000rpm or so.

When we had the blown coupe the best thing was at about 80ks when you stood on it all hell broke losse. AHHH nothing like it. It was a blown big block in an xc coupe with 850 rwhp with 20% over driven on the blower. Geeessss i miss that car.

It depends on the type of blower. Centrifugal ones (like through CAPA) gain boost with revs, so they behave very much like a turbo. Rootes/twin screw style blowers (think of a blown Commodore V6, even though they're pretty crap) have max boost throughout the rev range I think, so their torque curves are very flat & very fat! I suppose the Chev has a centrifugal blower on it. Either way is good, and both have advantages over each other!

Supercharging is a looooooooong way off for me! And I don't know whether to go CAPA stylez or KB stylez... so many options!
