Default MELB Vs SYDNEY ..............

Sydney and Melbourne are Australia's to most famous cities!

Which one is your favourite and why?

Sydney has the best harbour in the world, fantastic beaches, great weather and two of the worlds greatest landmarks in the opera house and the harbour bridge!!

Melbourne has the MCG greatest sporting ground on earth, home of Australian rules football,St Kilda beach!!

Whether you live in one,or you have been to one on holidays, what do you like and dont like about these two great cities??

Neither...

I've been to both cities several times and prefer Wynyard.
Nice. Quiet. Awesome roads that are mostly cop free - back roads ARE cop free. Nice people. The freak factor is nowhere near as high.

Sorry Melbs and Syd...

The only desirable place I've been to on the mainland is the Gold Coast. Now THAT was a beautiful place.

Just suits my lifestyle more, better weather, beaches, things to do.

Melbourne to me is dull, yeah they have some good sports events, but that doesnt bother me, the weather is not much better than Tas. The only good thing to me about living in Vic would be to watch the Bombers play live.

If I was to pick anywhere in Aus it would be Perth. That place is beautiful, similar reasons to why I prefer Syd over Melb, and the place is so clean.

Alot depends where you live based on last place lived I say Sydney as my wife and I lived right near darling harbour, in Melbourne we are out in the suburbs.

I prefer the weather in Sydney compared to Melbourne.

Housing is cheaper in Melbourne although seems to be changing.

I much prefer the traffic in Sydney (organised chaos) compared to Melbourne (pure anarchy).

So all in all I vote Sydney.

Much prefer Sydney to Melbourne but that's partly because I originated in Sydney (long ago). I really wouldn't live in either though. Melb is ok for a visit but I think they need to make up a lot there to compensate for the crap weather and having nothing much to do.

Brisbane would have to be the nicest city in Australia by far. It's clean, modern, decent enough size, people seem friendly, and South Bank, Kangaroo Point etc, very nice. I live in Melbourne, so i am not one of those people who say the place I just happen to live is the best. Although Melbourne is ok.

Melbourne is a beautiful city, Sydney is a beautiful natural site.

Sydney has a huge ego (about nothing really), Melbourne has a huge inferiority complex (which it shouldn't).

If you put Sydney where Melbourne is it would be nothing. If you put Melbourne where Sydney is it would be right up there with London, New York, Rio, Paris, Prague....

(Disclaimer, I'm a Sydneysider but would be happy to be anywhere but - but I do enjoy the water and other natural bits!)

Yes, I have been waiting for a thread like this for ages. Okay Sydney wins hands down!

Sydney has the best harbour, most attractions, best red light district, its easily the biggest (Sydney CBD, North Sydney and Bondi Junction are all bigger than Melbourne) and the weather is excellent. The only negatives is that it is so big and busy, it takes hours to get from one side to another.

Melbourne, the only thing Melbourne has over Sydney is the Crown Casino. It is small relative to Sydney, no where near as many people, ridiculous road rule of turning right from the left hand side and a plain hamburger is just meat (lol).

I didn't get hassled by aggressive beggers and drug dealers in Sydney which was a nice change from Melbourne.

You musn't have gone to the right (or should that be wrong) places.
Melboune is the most like a European city of the two to me, mainly because of the river and the trams.

Melbourne.

I was born and raised in Sydney.

Everyone knows why Sydney is such a great city. Harbour, Bridge, Opera House, Beaches etc etc. (Which are great if you're rich enough to leave near any of those)

The beaut thing about Melbourne, is that people from Sydney don't get it! "Boring, dull, bad weather etc etc" And I love it that Sydney people think that...then they'll stay in Sydney! You have to live here to understand Melbourne. The culture, the sport, the easy access to great facilities. And the fact that the entire population intermingles, unlike the ghettoes of Sydney. You wouldn't get Cronulla style riots in Melbourne.

In Melbourne, even the "poorest" suburbs have lots of trees, great access to parks and gardens, a pleasant place to live.

Go west in Sydney, and it's a concrete jungle (I used to go out west on business every week)

Melbourne has class that Sydney will never understand. In Melbourne people respect you for who you are, not how much you earn or how much your house is worth.

So there you go....should be enough hand grenades in there to stir up a few convicts

Melbourne has a European style cafe, pub and entertainment life that is unmatched by Sydney.

The hook turns are to prevent trams from being blocked by turning traffic at critical city intersections. Common sense really, if a little difficult for visitors to anticipate.

Having lived in every capital on the East Coast and spent a lot of time in Perth, my pick out of Sydney and Melbourne would be Melbourne. Melbourne is a relatively planned city, Sydney is not.

I thought Sydney was an anti-social, work only vaccuum.

I found Melb had plenty more to offer than Sydney in regard to social scene and weekend activities (re sport, rec etc) and IMO, Melbourne is a far more Australian city than Sydney - not by who lives there but more the attitude and lifestyle people there live. Melb has more "international quality" food, shopping and sport. Weather is all over the place though, hot as hell in Summer, cold as Ice in winter and you need a mobile wardrobe to keep up with the hourly changes.

If Canberra was on the list, I'd pick it in a heart beat over all the capitals, Brisbane might win me over with time.

And xcgxl said such nice things about Melbourne in the previous post too - that's rough justice!

I decided to leave Sydney after a guy died in the footpath infront of me, a random guy belted the driver next to me though the window at the lights, my car got broken into and all my tools stolen, my neighbour had a serious stalker, two guy's I woked with took a planned holiday to Long Bay - then set about trying to stay there, a company got the shits that I resigned and immediately reported the company car stolen, more than one subby ripped me off. Sydney and I just didn't click lol.

I personally live in sydney,I do love it,it does have its negatives, but everwhere has them(mainly traffic)

I have been to melbourne a fair bit as well,i have travelled to the states, new york reminds me of melbourne ,and los angeles reminds me of sydney!

but sydney is better than l.a.!

But the one thing that i cant get around it Melbourne is the weather, phew **** it gets cold,i remember walking down punt road one night after going to the gee to watch the footy, and i thought to myself whatever they say the temperature actually is,i dont believe them because this is colder than cold!

I have been to places that they say are colder and get alot of snow etc,but melbournes cold just goes right throufgh ya!

cheers guys,

St Kilda Beach? What's there? Needles in the sand...the place is dirty.
Want a real beach, go to Aireys Inlet or Lorne. Both are beaches with beautiful clean sand and water and great surf.

Best harbour in the world? Only because of the bridge. Without the bridge, it would be no more interesting than Port Philip Bay, which is far larger than Sydney Harbour. Greatest landmarks? No way! Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Great Wall of China are three off the top of my mind.

I am not saying that Sydney is bad. Sydney is superior to Melbourne for tourism, but come on, don't overstate.

I prefer Melbourne though. Less rugby, better water and more AFL :P
But I reckon that Queensland is awesome for a holiday. Greater beaches, better weather, bikinis everywhere and just a nice place.

I have been to the top of both of those and would like to do the Bridgeclimb one day, but everyone in my family is afraid of heights (and I am afraid of the cost!) Maybe my son will go with me one day.

It's a traffic nightmare, there's room for about 2 cars who wish to turn, anymore than that and the traffic is banked up. In most places in Sydney you can't even make a right turn. Two different worlds and very different places. They really can't even be compared. Now Melbourne to Wollongong, thats a fair comparison.
