Yes, it (Powershift) changes gears automatically and the driving experience (by design) is like an auto. However the internals have a lot more in common with a manual gearbox, it swaps gears and uses a clutch (two in fact).

Another way to think of it is it's like a manual gearbox, but you have a robot operating the clutch when you request a gear change (in manual/Sport mode) or also deciding when to change gears (in D).

In practice there are some things you should be aware of or actions you should never do that you might with a torque converter (e.g. don't hold the car on an incline with the accelerator; avoid creeping in traffic), but by and large you should be able to just drive without worrying about it. 'Til it needs servicing or repair...
