I would also like to get into the minds of others to see why they make these choices...but would find it difficult initiating the conversation like you did. Not saying you were rude, but raising the question with them probably took her by surprise.
I parked at the Airport a couple of weeks ago (in a vacant area), only to have someone park next to me. I saw how blissfully unaware they were of how close their door was to my car as they loaded their bags and stuff.
I politely, said "excuse me, would you mind being careful with the door on the car next to you". She looked at me like I had no right to even show concern....even clapped her hands at me as she drove away.
