I think its because of stereotypes, brand recognition and populate culture.
From what i have seen, heard and experienced the older Fords are better (EF AU2/3 and BF)
The competitors also offer more for the customers $ as well as a fresher/more hip design and marketing and that famous 'fuel economy' and 'award winning small/medium car' etc...
